When did you start singing?
I’ve been singing ever since I could talk. I grew up singing in school plays, talent shows, etc. It’s always been my favorite thing to do.

Who influences your music?
I have tons of influences. My main influence right now is John Mayer, The Beatles, Bruno Mars, Celine Dion, and Norah Jones.

What’s it like hearing yourself on Radio Disney? What was your reaction when first heard yourself?
It’s an awesome feeling! I was so excited when I first heard “Goodbyes”, my first single, on Radio Disney. I was definetly screaming and so thankful.

If you got to go and join a specific artist/band (past or present) to feature in their song, which artist&which song? (For example, you could turn the clock back to May and record California Girls with Katy Perry)
Oh, I like this question! I would have loved to be featured on Bruno Mars track, Just The Way You Are… It’s my favorite song and I think our voices would sound good together :)

Do you base your songs of real life experiences?
Absolutely. I write about what’s going on in my life. So, boys, friends, the industry, etc. I also write about what my friends are going through. I just get inspired by anything haha.

Are your own songs a different type of songs as to the ones you listen to everyday?
Well, I have a wide variety of music I listen to. My favorite is Alternative, indie/acoustic. So Iron & Wine, Elliott Smith, Bon Iver, The Shins, etc. But I love The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Celine Dion, Hall & Oates. And then I like Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, John Mayer.. So I listen to completely different music then my own at times. But I think it’s a good thing, because all these different styles inspire me.

Describe your style of music
It’s pop/rock. Something fun to rock out to!

Favorite song of all time?

Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, Taking Chances by Celine Dion, Be Be Your Love by Rachel Yamagata and Chemicals React by Aly & Aj.

Up-coming projects we should look out for?

Right now there’s just a lot of things going on behind the scenes. I’m trying to figure out what projects I want to do, etc. But there are tons of great opportunities that I’m stoked about.

You recently released a new holiday song with Anna Golden called “Magical Christmas,” can you tell us what the song is about? Yea! Anna is a really close friend of mine, and when I was in her hometown, we wanted to write an Xmas song! It’s about the Magical Season in New York City. We both LOVE NYC and the Holidays are perfect there. It’s a really fun, upbeat song that will be perfect for Holiday parties :) We had a great time recording it, too! Make sure you follow Anna on Twitter! @annagoldenmusic

What are some of the things you do to prepare for the holiday season? I always write down a “Gift List”. Just an idea of what I want to get my family and friends. I already have some ideas for a couple friends. I’m so stoked to start making them :)

Do you have any family holiday traditions?
Yes! We have a little mailbox in our living room, that we put gifts in for each other leading up to Christmas. We always see a movie Christmas Day, open a couple gifts on Xmas Eve, bake cookies, etc.

Can you tell us about your earliest holiday memory? I can remember seeing Santa when I was a little girl. My mom would put me in these fancy dresses, and I’d always ask for a matching purse.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up Christmas morning? Well considering Christmas morning is the ONLY morning I wake up super early, I wake my parents up and then head downstairs to open gifts :)

What has been the best gift you remember receiving from Santa? A cash register. I went through this phase where I wanted to work at a store. It was a legit cash register, that looked like it came out of Target. I was the happiest girl ever.

Which holiday movie will you watch over and over again? ELF! Hands down. I have & will watch that movie 5 times a day. Even if it’s July!

What is your favorite holiday song? My Grown Up Christmas List & Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.

What decoration sits on the top of your Christmas tree? A beautiful Angel wearing a gold dress. On my tree in my room, there’s a sparkly swirly thing. Haha. I’m so proud of my tree. It’s black and has a Silver/Purple theme.

Do you have a favorite tree ornament? There’s an Ornament that my little cousin, Bella made with her picture on it. It’s so precious.

Where do you usually go to buy gifts? Everywhere. Lol. There’s not really one store I shop at more than others.

What do you plan on giving as gifts this year to friends and family? I can’t really say! What if they read this ;) I plan on making a couple of my friends something super funny. It’s an inside joke so I probably shouldn’t say haha. My parents are so hard to shop for. I want to get them something extra special since they’ve done so much for me

What are some of the things you hope to find under the tree this year? Honestly, I still haven’t told my parents what I want for Christmas. I can’t think of anything. I love surprises. Maybe some records?

How do you plan on spending the holiday’s this year? Well the Holidays are a great excuse to eat tons of cookies! So my friends and I will be baking a lot, wearing ugly Christmas sweaters, going to Zoo Lights (Our Portland Zoo transforms into an Xmas Wonderland), and Gingerbread House contests ;)

What is your New Years Resolution? Travel!

The holidays are right around the corner, and Savannah is gearing up for them with a special holiday song! The Song of Christmas Time is already available on iTunes! I can definitely imagine decorating the Christmas tree to this tune!

Fanlala caught up with Savannah to talk about this beautiful new song and her upcoming holiday plans!

Fanlala: Tell us about The Song of Christmas Time…

Savannah Outen: “This is an original Christmas song that I wrote with Steve Sundholm. It’s just about the meaning of Christmas and what the holidays should really be like. It has a great message, and I hope that it can be a Christmas favorite for many more years to come.”

F: Any funny Santa stories from growing up?

S: “My favorite story is when I went to see Santa at a mall with my best friend. We were in 2nd grade, and as we were sitting on his lap, he fell asleep! We were just looking at each other like, “What the heck is going on?” Haha. It was awesome.”

F: Fave holiday song?

S: “Grown Up Christmas List” & “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” :)

F: Have you started your Christmas shopping?  Do you procrastinate or get it done early?

S: “I have! I like to start Christmas shopping right after Halloween. I always get it done, but I like to wait to buy a few things a couple days before Christmas, just because it puts me in the Holiday mood.” :)

F: Update everyone on what else you’re up to!

S: I’m going to be a correspondent for the AMA Coca-Cola Pre Show LIVE this Sunday. I am also performing a little bit of the new single during the Pre Show as well! I am so stoked. I’ll be releasing another Christmas song very soon, too! It’s a duet with my good friend, Anna Golden :)

Conversation Pieces interviewed Savannah with some fun and quirky questions they just had to know about her! Check out the interview below:

What was the name of the first song you wrote?

The first song I wrote was my first single, Goodbyes.

Do you get stage fright?

No. I always get really excited and anxious! When I hear and see the crowd, I’m so pumped.

Do you own any vintage items?

I do! I love vintage clothes. I have a Vintage Beatles shirt that I wear all the time. I also have a Vintage Beach Cruiser that my best friend just got me for my birthday. It’s absolutely amazing.

What’s your favorite dessert?

I’d have to say coffee ice cream, or anything chocolate/peanut butter!

And your favorite season of the year?

Fall! I love wearing coats and boots.

What’s your favorite song right now?

The Lucky Ones by Brendan James.

Place you want to travel to?

I’ve always wanted to travel to Paris. I have a weird obsession with the Eiffel Tower.

Do you write song using pen and paper?

When I first started writing, I wrote in my journal. It’s cool, because I just came across the journal I wrote Goodbyes in the other day! But recently I’ve been writing on my laptop in a word document.

What song was the hardest to write?

I think the hardest song I’ve ever written was a song called, “Picture On The Wall”. I haven’t released it yet, but I’ve loved the title for some time now. And whenever I’d finish writing the song, I’d come up with a new idea. It’s finished, but I’m sure I’ll re-write it next week. Haha.

What were you doing when you found out your song made it onto the Disney playlist?

I was actually listening to the “Kick It Or Pick It” on the radio. And when I heard “Goodbyes”  got a 95% pick it I started crying. I was so happy.

What’s your most embarrassing experience?

I almost tripped over my guitar on stage once. Which was really embarrassing. And one time, I hit my microphone on my lip, and it started bleeding. That was also really embarrassing.

And the most awkward place a fan has recognized you?

I met a fan in the bathroom once, which was strange. There was another time where I got noticed in Victoria Secret’s and it was just super awkward haha.

What is the weirdest item you have had to sign?

A pizza box! And there was still 4 pieces of cold pizza inside.

What’s your favorite show on T.V.?

The Office <3

And your favorite ice cream flavor?

Peanut Butter Chocolate or Coffee.

Favorite fashion accessory?

I LOVE rings. I’m recently really into long, earrings too.

What is the weirdest item you carry in your purse?

Honestly, I don’t carry anything weird in my purse. The only weird thing is, I always have a pair of sunglasses in my purse even if it’s raining outside, just in case the sun decides to come out haha.

Do you have any quirks about yourself to share?

I’m a dork. I always make jokes, and usually I’m the only person laughing haha.

Why was it important for you to write a Christmas song?

I love the holidays, and Christmas is the best time of year. When I listen to a Christmas song, it puts me in the best mood, so I really wanted to release an original this holiday season. Anna wanted to as well so we decided to write one together! We had the best time writing and recording it. We were in the studio until 5 in the morning in LA. It was crazy.

What is your best Christmas memory?

I think the best memories are just spending time with the family. My favorite thing is just doing all the Christmas activities like Zoo Lights, Caroling, baking cookies, and gift exchanges. Also, on Christmas Day my family and I always see a movie.

Savannah sat down with Your Hidden Potential for a brief interview. Check it out below!

Hi Savannah, Its great to have you here, how are you doing today?

Hi, I’m great how are you?

Just a bit chilly, but im great you know thanks.

So can you quickly give me some background information about yourself?

Yea, I just turned 18 a couple weeks ago, I’ve been singing since I was a little girl, and I love performing :)

When and how did you get involved in music?

I’ve been surrounded by music ever since I was young. I grew up listening to Hanson, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Aretha Franklin.. tons of different artists. I always wanted to be a performer and sing on stage so I told my parents when I was about 10 that I wanted to start making it happen. And they have been my biggest supporters ever since.

Did you have members of your family that were actively involved in music whilst growing up?

I don’t come from a musical family. My mom does play violin but other than that, my family is not musical. My Dad and I always joke that I got my voice from him haha.

You are your musical and personal inspiration?

I love Celine Dion. Not only is she an amazing singer and performer, but she seems like such a sweet lady. The Beatles are another big inspiration. It’s so inspiring to listen to their music. It has such an impact on peoples lives.

Why did you decide to start uploading videos on YouTube? weren’t you shy or scared of negative comments towards your music?

It was actually my parents idea. Nothing was happening at the time, so my parents discovered youtube and wanted me to post a video of me singing “Listen” by Beyonce. At first, I didn’t want to do it. I was nervous to see what people would think. I remember the next day, I looked at the video and it had tons of views and I was just so happy.

How do you deal with negative comments as we know that YouTube or the internet really give anyone the ability to state their opinion publicly on one’s work?

I honestly try not to let those comments get to me. Once in a while, I will get upset from a rude comment, but you just have to brush it off. You can’t let them effect you.

How difficult was it for your to transfer your career, as an amateur singer on YouTube, into a professional singer, you know its very easy to be coined as a “YouTube artist.”

It hasn’t been too difficult. I don’t mind being known as the “YouTube Artist” just because that’s where I started and that’s where most everyone knows me from. It’s funny because when people recognize me they come up to me and call me Savannah7448.

Do you feel that getting signed to a major label helps with the transition, like the Justin Bieber transition?

I think that now a days you don’t need to be signed to be successful. Although, having a major label behind you is always a good thing because they can get you major radio airplay, access to big tours, etc. Being an unsigned artist, YouTube has been an awesome way for kids to hear my music. I think it would be awesome to be signed to a major label, though.

Are they any deals or interest from major labels to sign you, I know you worked with Esmee Denters a while before she got signed, do you still keep up to date with her, any chance you guys will be working together in the future?

I’ve met with a few labels. I’m crossing my fingers something works out. I’ve actually never worked with Esmee. I have talked to her a few times on YouTube though and she’s a very sweet girl. I’d love to work with her in the future.

You also design your own clothes, is this something you are looking to branch in and focus on in the future?

I wish I designed my own clothes! ;) hahaha. I’ve always loved drawing designs. When I was in school, I’d always draw random outfits because I was bored. I still have those saved so it would be a dream for those to come to life someday.

What has the most memorable moment so far for you as an artist?

I’ve had so many memorable moments so far. I think the number one moment for me was reaching 50 million views on Youtube. That was such an amazing moment. I had worked so hard to get to that point and it was really cool to know that 50 million people have watched my videos. Also going on tour with Nat & Alex was an amazing time. It was my first tour, and it really gave me the chance to connect with my fans.

What do you do to unwind?

I’m very boring so I love to just sit at home and watch movies with friends. I’m always writing songs in my room, too. But I don’t mind being busy all of the time. It’s a good feeling.

What other artist do you like to watch on YouTube?

There are so many talented people on YouTube! My good friends, Boyce Avenue are amazing. Such talented and sweet guys. But I love to laugh so “MirandaSings08? is hilarious. My friends and I are obsessed with her. And recently I was introduced to “Jake And Amir”. I can’t start my day without watching one of their videos. And my friend, Lucas makes those “Fred” videos that are just too funny :)

What advice would you give to young girls about following in your footsteps?

It’s a really tough business. When I first started out, I thought it was going to be easy. But I’ve learned A LOT about this crazy industry. My advice to young girls who want to be in the business is to Never Give Up.

Make sure it is something you are VERY passionate about. There are going to be so many people telling you that you won’t make it, or that you aren’t good enough. But you have to believe in yourself and know what your capable of doing.

What are your future plans?

My future plans…. I really want to release an acoustic EP soon. Just something to give to the fans. I really want to share some new songs I’ve been working on.

I’m also going to be releasing two new Christmas songs soon which I’m stoked about! I LOVE the holidays :)
I am going to be a correspondent for the American Music Awards Coca-Cola Pre Show LIVE on November 21st. That will be so much fun. I’ve always wanted to attend an award show.

Most of all, just keep working hard and try to make stuff happen ;)

Thanks for your time Savannah.

Thank you so much!
